The BR Class 43, also known as the Intercity 125, is Britain's first high-speed train. Operating at 125 mph (201km/h), the Class 43 took the country by storm, racing to and from the capital. The locomotives were built from 1975 to 1982 and are used on most main lines in the UK. In Train Sim World, it is featured in Great Western Express & Midlands Main Line: Leicester - Derby and Nottingham.

About[]

The British Rail Class 43 is an icon of high speed travel in the UK and currently holds the World Speed Record for a Diesel-Powered train. Designed in the later part of the 1970s, the 'HST' (short for High Speed Train) became a staple of high speed travel in the UK and, more than forty years on, has built a legacy of being the most successful trains on Britain's Railways.

Operators[]

Great Western Railway[]

Great Western Railway operates 119 BR class 43 HST power cars which it uses on long distance services on the Great Western Main Line from London to destinations such as Bristol, Cardiff, Swansea, Carmarthen, Penzance and Plymouth. Following the Southall and Ladbroke Grove rail crashes, GWR requires its HSTs to have Automatic Train Protection and Automatic Warning System safety systems in operation. If either is faulty, the train is not used.

Great Western Railway operates the 8 carriage version of the InterCity 125. The HST will soon be phased out and replaced by the Class 800 Hitachi Super Express on the Great Western Railway. However, in addition, GWR are to retain 24 powercars and 48 carriages to form 11 four-carriage sets for use on local services between Cardiff and Penzance. These will be fitted with automatic doors and controlled emission toilets, to allow their operation beyond 2020, at Doncaster Works. On some journeys, a trend that parallels the Class 390 Pendolino & Class 220 Voyager locomotives, Great Western Railway (GWR) will employ the same 2 Power Car & 4 Coach combination using their famed. and reliable MK3 Coaches in between the Class 43 Power Cars respectively. Journeys such as Newquay to Plymouth, Cardiff to Bristol have employed this method, and this has increased the vehicle's reliability ten fold, and has significantly reduced costs in maintenance and emissions simultaneously. This has allowed the HST to continue chugging it's way into the modern era of 'being green' whilst retaining the same fast, and powerful workhorse-driven service as it has done for over 4 decades.
